For the last 5 years, we have seen Africa Fashion Week events develop to innovative fashion gatherings showcasing work from international designers. We would say that Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) has been one of the most consistent so far. The locations have moved to anywhere in London receiving guests up to thousands. This year, Africa Fashion Week London will take place on 8 September at West Hall, Olympia in London. And Nigerian superstar Yemi Alade is also the face of this year’s London edition.
It all started in 2011 at the Gibson Hall, Bishopsgate in London. That 1st edition was a fantastic success
The second edition was during the 2012 London Olympics. The venue was the massive Spitalfields Market Hall, located at one of the renowned fashion spots in London. It had an unprecedented number of attendances of more than 20,000 visitors.
In 2013, it enlarged the coast of the organization and it was moved to the Old Truman’s Brewery on Brick Lane in London, another notable fashion district. It was another great success and in that year it hosted the 1st of its kind Africa Arts and Fashion Banquet 2013, at one of the most prestigious venues in London – The Dorchester Hotel, Park Lane, London.
In 2014, it was moved to what has now become the home of AFWL, that’s London Olympia, in Kensington. It was like finally, all that had been looked for and more. Since 2014 to 2015 and till September 8 to 10, 2016 West Hall, Olympia, London it is.
The sixth open call for fashion designers to take part at the Africa Fashion Week London 2016 is announced. The AFWL platform seeks to discover and support top emerging African talent from all over the globe including fashion design students.
